In many situations the article is omitted. Some of them:

• Before proper nouns (names of persons, cities, most of countries),
• when addressing people directly,
• after the verb ser, if the predicate expresses nationality, occupation or title,
• after demonstrative, indicative, interrogative adjectives,
• usually with numerals,
• in many phrases.
