Present participle is formed with the help of the ending -cy; the initial form is the 3rd person plural present tense: idą - idący (outgoing), biorą - biorący (taking), piszą - piszący (writing), czytają - czytający (reading).
The adverbial form has the ending in -ąc: idąc, pisząc.
Past participle (passive participle) has the ending -ny or -ty: bić - bity, czytać - czytany, rozumieć - rozumiany (beaten, read, understood). It is also used to form the passive:
Książka jest czytana – The book is being read.
Passive is rarely used in Polish.
Adverbial past participle has the ending -łszy or -wszy. It is formed from the 3rd person masculine past tense: przeczytać - przeczytał - przeczytawszy< /i> (after reading), wypiec - wypiekł - wypiekłszy (after baking, after having baked).
