It expresses past activities that have nothing to do with the present.

The above inflection is for regular verbs. Passato remoto has many irregular forms. Most verbs in -ire have regular passato remoto (exceptions are : dire, venire, apparire). Especially verbs in -ere have very often irregular forms.

In most other irregular verbs, the irregular forms are 1 and 3 person singular and 3 pers. plural. The other forms are formed regularly from the infinitive (2nd person sg. and plur., 1st pers. plur.) : -are, -ere > -esti, -emmo, -este, -ire > -isti, -immo, -iste.
